Adding Audio to a Grove Story

Info

Before audio can be used in a Grove story, it must first be added to the Grove/Nexus system.

This is usually done automatically when a story is connected to Nexus.

However, if you are attempting to attach audio to a web story that is not part of a normal story workflow, please refer to the section: Adding audio for a Grove story not associated with Nexus.

Adding Primary Audio

This is what plays in the player at the top of a story.

This audio is usually added automatically, via Nexus. However, you can still add audio manually if it published on a DLP:

Click the magnifying glass and find the audio. Having the audio title will help:

Where do you get the audio title? You can get it from Nexus or go to the page it's on and play the audio — the audio title will be what shows up in the player in the upper right:

To manually choose the Primary Audio for a story:

  1. Click the Audio tab.

  2. Search for the audio you want to use by clicking the magnifying glass and searching with the title.

If you recently added it using the steps mentioned in Adding audio for a Grove story not associated with Nexus, it should be listed near the top of the dropdown menu.

  3. Press Reload over the Preview of your story page and you'll see the audio populate the player.

  4. Publish your story.

Adding Secondary Audio

In addition to (or instead of) the Primary Audio on a Grove story, you might want to feature audio in the body text, aka secondary audio. To do so:

  1. Click the music note icon to open up the “add audio” dialog.

  2. Select your audio file from the pulldown menu

  3. Give your audio a title

  4. Reload the preview page to see the audio player appear.

  5. Publish your story.

Adding audio for a Grove story not associated with Nexus

If the audio isn't already available in Grove to select, follow these steps:

Step 1 - Upload your audio into Seamus.

Yes, we still use Seamus for uploading audio

  1. Go to seamus.npr.org and click on Upload Audio (located in the bottom right of the page).

  2. Select the "Purpose" of your audio. This will typically be a show (Morning Edition, Fresh Air, etc.) If your audio is not associated with a show, select "Digital Specials" as your purpose.

  3. Select your WAV file.

  4. Leave Promotion Location as "None"

  5. Uncheck the box labeled "This audio is associated with a story in Seamus"

  6. Leave Story ID blank

  7. Verify your email is written correctly and press Upload. You can also add other recipients if you would like.
  8. Leave the Seamus page open until your upload has completed.
  9. After 5 - 20 minutes (depending on the length of the audio) you will receive an e-mail with the audio path.

Step 2 - Add your audio to the Grove system

  1. In Grove, click the "+" button at the top of the page and select "Audio"

  2. In the new dialog that opens, type or paste in your audio title, it should be the same as your headline in most scenarios.

  3. Under Provider, select NPR Audio

  4. Leave "Is This A Live Stream?" as "Not A Live Stream"

  5. Under Audio Path, paste the audio path from the Wendu email you received.

  6. Under File Location choose "Internal"

  7. Under File Format, click the "+" button and select MP3, you can leave the file size blank.

  8. Turn "Allow Embed" on (unless you've been instructed otherwise).

  9. Turn "Allow Download" on (unless you've been instructed otherwise).

  10. You can skip "Audio Expiration" date in most situations.

  11. Copy the duration of the audio file from the Wendu email and paste it into the Duration blank. This needs to be the format with hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. (ex. 00:37:14:101)

  12. At this point you can preview your audio file by pressing the play button.

  13. After confirming your audio plays, press the "Publish" button. This will not publish any stories or anything, it will simply create your audio asset as a Grove audio asset.

Step 3 - Add your audio to the story

Now that your audio asset has been added as a Grove audio asset, please refer to the following sections to add the audio to the story:
