Working with StoryTeller

Create a script, cover or document

Note: Documents you have written that are not associated to a card (or have been removed from all cards) will appear in your assignments list.

To create a Script, Cover or Document from a Card, go to your Broadcast Presentation, then Presentation Documents and click the Add Document button:

Doing that will open a tab, like so:

Moving a script or document from one card to another

Should you need to change the card a script or document is currently associated with:

  • Open the document in StoryTeller
  • From the top menu bar, click on Tools > Associate Document to Card
  • Use the drop down to select any card currently open in a Nexus tab, or create a new Card
  • Click Add To Selected Card or Add To New Card
  • If necessary, remove the document from the original card

Appearance

If you're used to your documents looking a certain way, font-wise, you can set up defaults or you can change them as needed on a per-document basis.

To set defaults, go to your name in the upper-right corner, and choose User Settings. Choose Storyteller. Behold, 'tis your type defaults (and your read rate default):

In a single document, the controls are in the toolbar:

Opening a document created by someone with different settings will not automatically reformat it to match yours. To make it match yours, use Ctrl-Alt-U on a PC and Ctrl-Option-U on a Mac.

Editing

In the upper-right corner of the Document window, you’ll see your initials and a Multiple Editors or Single Editor button. Use the button to switch among Single-Editor, Multiple Editor and Observer modes:

If other editors are in the document, you’ll see their initials in the corner with yours:

If you want all those people out of your document, switch to Single-Editor Mode. This will render everyone else an Observer. They will not be able to type into your document until you switch it back to Multi-Editor Mode. Of course, other people can do this to you, too.

Spellcheck

Spellcheck uses your browser's built-in dictionary, and identifies misspelled words with a red underline.

To autocorrect a misspelled word in StoryTeller:

  • Hold shift and right-click the misspelled word to bring up your browser's context menu
  • Select the appropriate correction

Icons

Look at all those icons in the toolbar!

Use the glasses icon to set a Read Rate.

Select text and click the circle-with-line icon to exclude text from Duration. You can also use the key combination Ctrl-Alt-D on a PC and Ctrl-Option-D on a Mac.

The headphones icon adds a Duration. More detail on that is below.

Use the plus-in-speech bubble icon to add a comment. You have to select some text first.

The book icon adds a factcheck.

You can also right-click the text and choose the option from the menu.

The speech-bubbles icon shows all comments and factchecks.

Whatever those lines are will count your words.

The chain links icon adds a link.

The quotes icon adds a pull quote.

Tools

There are many interesting things under Tools:

View Document History

To see prior versions of the document, and restore them if you want.

Edit Macros

You can edit macros to assign commands to automatically insert phrases etc. that you find yourself typing repeatedly. On a Mac, the Alt key is the Option key. Macros are set at the user level, so your macros will not appear for anyone else.

Associate Document to Card

Adds the document to an existing or new card.

Associate Selection to Card

Adds the selected text to a new document in an existing or new card.

Duration

The headphones icon adds a Duration. So does Ctrl-D on a PC and Cmd-D on a Mac.

Click where it says Clip Name to give the clip a name. Type the duration where it says 00:00 and press Enter:

To exclude text from your Duration, select text and click the circle-with-line icon. You can use the key combination Ctrl-Alt-D on a PC and Ctrl-Option-D on a Mac. And you can manually type carets around the text.

Use the six-dot icon on the left of the gray Duration box to drag it elsewhere in the document.

The x on the left will remove the Duration.

To see how long tape is, select the text and look on the right side of the gray bar (one of the many gray bars …):

This is handy for cutting!
