This is a quick fact sheet of everything you need to know about Podcasts in Nexus. Here are some other resources that may be helpful: TODO

Episode Cards

Episode cards are where podcast episode content will be entered for publishing downstream to other platforms. See below for more information on Episode cards

Creating an episode card

Much like story cards, episode cards can be created in two ways:

Card creation requires:

  • Group: Likely to be your podcast name, but occasionally the name of a broader group - such as "Planet Money" to "Summer School"
  • Channel: Your podcast name
  • Planned Date: Expected date the podcast will publish

The card will then display in your assignments, in your group's assignments and on any relevant cardboards your team has hooked up to. Learn how to set up your user settings to automatically add cards to cardboards here

Viewing created episode cards

Cards will appear in a few places depending on your user settings:

Users, Roles and Sources

This is where you can enter bylines and references for your podcast episode. Those starred will be made public on Grove and playable platforms. The other Users added are for internal reference.

Sources is where you can enter your DEX source tracking. Read more on sources here

Associated Cards

Associating your episode card to another card (another episode, story, newscast card) can be helpful to track and share content between the two. Here are a few cases where you may find it helpful to associate cards:

  • The cards are part of a broader series of content and share common assets or metadata (ex: death of a prominent figure)
  • The associated card used overlapping sources or documents that could be easily shared and referenced in this card
  • The associated card references an earlier version of the work that was abandoned or turned into something else

Associated vs Sequence cards

Cards in the episode sequence view represent "child" stories within the podcast. Some podcasts like Up First reference three story cards for most episodes. This sequence view functionality allows those teams to quickly reference metadata, assets, users and more. You can think of sequence view as a subset of associated cards - with the special functionality to visually reference the ordered story cards and their relevant information.

Episode Defaults

Episode defaults set basic information true on most if not all episodes in the podcast channel. If you think there is an error in these defaults, please reach out to IT Support directly (202-513-2980), or file a ticket.

Episode Card Sequence View

The sequence view is a tool for teams that build podcast episodes off of a series of story cards. This sequence view allows you to grab a set of story cards from your assignments or rundowns to reference as part of your episode production. Putting cards in your sequence view let's you:

  • Quickly grab their assets and place them in the media experiences
  • Reference the metadata of each card, including:
    • Title, description, other text assets
    • Sources and bylines
    • Media assets like audio

The sequence view is not required for production and publishing and is only meant to be an aid.

Mid Roll Tagger

Ad tagging can now be done within Nexus. The mid-roll tagger is where you can set the locations of the ads within your podcast episode.

Episode Card Assets

This pane shows all media assets uploaded to the card or uploaded to the cards in the episode card sequence. These assets can then be references in the media experiences for publishing.

Assets can be filtered, sorted and searched.

Episode Card Presentations

A presentation is a publishable version of the episode card. Most of the time, you may only have a "PEP", which covers publishing to our website, RSS feeds and CDNs for listening on playable platforms.

  • PEP (Podcast Episode Presentation): Build out of the podcast episode, some podcasts will expand beyond the episode audio with body text, featured media, etc. Others will keep it simple (think of the difference between DLP's and DSP's)
  • News Magazine Story: Also known as a Roll Off. Sharing the podcast episode (or segment within the episode) to a Broadcast for radio airing
  • Rerun: Sharing the podcast episode again to the same podcast channel feed
  • Feed Drop: Sharing the podcast episode to a different podcast channel feed (ex: Planet Money episode publishing within Life Kit feed) there can be internal (NPR show shared to NPR show) and external (non-NPR show shared to NPR show) feed drops

Episode Card Media Experiences

Media experiences are unique, publishable assets coming out of each episode card. These are configured in the admin panel (Podcast Key Sheet). Media experiences are published within presentations. Common media experiences include:

  • Full Episode [Primary]: This is the standard, full episode published to our website, to the app and to podcast platforms
  • Grove Body Only [Accessory]: Audio for display within the body of the Grove published story
  • Tap Thru Promo [Accessory]: This is the Promo audio for the episode
  • NPR One Only [Accessory]: Audio for usage only on the NPR One App
  • Amazon [Accessory]: This is the unique, Amazon version of the episode
  • Bonus / Plus Only [Accessory]: This is the ad free, plus only version of the episode
  • Trailer [Primary]: This is a trailer of the podcast channel. This should not be published with any other media experience on the card

Media experiences fall into two categories: primary and accessory. Primary media experiences can publish on their own and should not be published with other primary media experiences. Accessory media experiences cannot publish on their own and exist to enhance the episode.

Key sheets are an admin functionality built as a reference for each podcast channel to set channel metadata and episode level defaults. Read more on Key Sheets here.
