Known Issues and Workarounds

The following is a list of things Nexus users should be aware of, including workarounds for known bugs until they can be resolved.

1. Setting audio elements or covers as ready for air (RFA)

If you experience this issue, you are likely attempting to set as RFA on the wrong tab (such as assets or metadata).

  • To set as RFA, click on the Presentations tab, and set audio elements as "ready for air" from there.
  • If you are still unable to set as "ready for air" from the Presentations tab, it is likely due to a permissions issue. Please email Opsdeskstaff@npr.org to get your permissions fixed.

2. Missing Card from assignments list

Description: A card in your assignments list appears to have disappeared.

Solution: Cards not modified in the last 90 days are automatically archived and moved from your assignments list to your archive list, and do not appear in a standard card search. If a card appears to be missing from your assignments list, please check your archive list.

If you still cannot find an archived assignment, try searching the archive by entering the card ID, and selecting archive.

Alternatively, if you do not know your card number, try searching for your name, and selecting archive.

If the missing card appears in the search results list or your archive list, you can restore it from the archive by either:

  1. Clicking on the elipses (...) to the right of the card title, and selecting restore.

Or

  1. Clicking on the title of the card to open it, then clicking restore on the bar directly above the Metadata tab.

3. StoryTeller

Formatting, as in Ctrl B, Ctl I and highlighting continue to be an issue.

4. MTE / Media Tray

4.1 Unable to open MTE from Nexus / Unable to save MTE audio directly into Nexus

Quick note: This issue is specific to using MTE integrated with Nexus, not MTE-Remote which has a different use-case and workflow described here.

Should you experience issues using MTE with Nexus, please confirm/try the following:

  • You are connected to VPN/on the office network.

  • You are using MTE (not MTE-remote), and are logged into nexus.npr.org (not st-nexus.npr.org).

  • Fix a potentially corrupt MTE configuration by doing the following:

    • Close MTE if currently running
    • Open MTE-remote from the desktop shortcut and close it after fully loading. Be sure not to close the window that says "Keep this window open while running MTE-Remote"
    • Re-open MTE from either Media Tray or the taskbar to see if the issue is resolved
  • Restart your computer

  • If you continue to experience issues using MTE with Nexus, close MTE and check the following before reopening MTE - work with IT if necessary:

    • Media Tray has been updated to the latest version: 1.0.3 (prod) as of 11/15/23.
    • Media Tray is pointed to the Prod Nexus environment from the Config: Switch Nexus Environments menu.
  • If you are still experiencing issues, also confirm that:

    • Chrome is at least version 114.
    • MTE is version 7.7.

4.2 Converting Files

If you are experiencing conversion/export issues, please follow the workaround below.

Workaround: You can convert a file format using MTE. Below is an example to convert/export audio to MP2.

  1. Open the audio file in MTE
  2. Drag the file into the timeline
  3. Select Save Extended from the File menu.
  4. In the Save Extended window:
    • Select Save to Classic File System in the target dropdown.
    • Select Content Depot from the Formats menu
    • Change the save destination and file name if desired, and click OK

4.3 Attempting to use Loudness Meter to level/analyze a clip in MTE causes the save dialog to appear

This issue is likely caused by a bad MTE configuration, and should be resolved by taking the following steps:

  1. Close MTE if running.
  2. Open MTE-remote from the desktop shortcut, then close it.
  3. Open MTE from the taskbar.

4.4 Common MTE dubbing issues

Please refer to the following FreshService guides:

Unable to record off the web / Web dubbing also records your microphone

Troubleshooting Dub audio quality

4.5 MTE starts with a spinning wheel when opened from Nexus

This is likely caused by an expired Okta login.

To resolve, please navigate to npr.okta.com, log back into Okta, and try opening an audio file from Nexus again.

5. General use

5.1 Nexus panes bounce/flicker/glitch/jump

Zoom the browser in and out until it stops, using Ctrl+ and Ctrl- on a PC and Cmd+ and Cmd- on a Mac.

5.2 A reporter's affiliated station is incorrect

Please email Opsdeskstaff@npr.org.

5.3 The Group associated with someone's profile is incorrect

Please email Opsdeskstaff@npr.org.

5.4 Something (a wire, transcript, etc.) crashes Nexus and Nexus cannot be restarted because that something is still open

Open a link to Nexus — to a card, a rundown, anything that gets you past nexus.npr.org's main screen. Random example: https://nexus.npr.org/app/rundown/9/2023-09-04/4

6. Content Depot

6.1 Issues uploading to Content Depot

Please be aware of the following two points when uploading to Content Depot:

  1. You must first extract the audio files from the zip file created using the Nexus export tool before using the assets. If you try to directly copy from zip folder, it is not going to work.
  2. You may have an expired Okta login. To resolve, please navigate to npr.okta.com, log back into Okta if necessary, and try again.

7. Rundowns

7.1 Card in Rundown appears in a gray box with a dotted-line around it

Context: This gray box and dotted line is a temporary indicator for actions still being saved to the Nexus backend. When a new element is added to the board it will appear in this state until the backend has had the chance to save the changes. Normally, this is a very quick process. However, if the element remains in this state, the action to save changes may have failed.

Workaround: If this state lasts more than few seconds, try refreshing the board to see if that changes the state of that element. If that does not work, try removing and re-adding the element.
